MuhMur Radio Broadcast 5 August 2021.

 Quite an eclectic broadcast featuring some old classics and artists that are no strangers to the MuhMur Radio playlist, and a couple of new projects that are new to my ears ... 

The programme starts with a track from the new Leda release "Covid 'Music' I Made With My Guitar". a CDREP on the ever collectable Förfall label. Hot on the trail of the re-issue of eponymous Leda debut album on Grapefruit Records this 28 minute 'sketchbook' is a great addition in the Förfall cannon.

2021 has seen the start of the Extratool 7" series. The latest on the roster is by American duo Kidbug. After two singles of experimental, electroacoustic ambience this latest release came as a great surprise. Refreshing blast of experimental shoegazing experimental rock. Kidbug are a completely new name to me and thanks to Extratool for introducing them to these ears. I am now desperately trying to find a copy of their "Theme From Kidbug" 7". One of my favourite 7" singles from my teen years is the 1981 EP "Fragile Sentences" by Bron Area on Ambivalent Scale Recordings. Trawling the internet a few weeks ago (I don't surf ... I trawl) I found a CD copy of their 1983 album "The Trees And The Villages". Re-issued on the Glass Redux label, it was originally released by Glass Records, the CD also includes tracks from the 12" 'Different Phrases'. There's a great booklet with the CD too on the history of Nuneaton's finest (they pre-date Eyeless In Gaza) and how the album should have been called "The Treason Of Images" but the title got misheard over a phone call and so it will always be "The Trees And The Villages".  https://glassredux.bandcamp.com A great album, Glass Redux also released a great CD Religious Overdose recently. 

I recently spent a couple of days reorganising the cassette collection. I bought some new racks off a lady in Exeter ... the result of internet trawling. In doing so I unearthed some gems I hadn't played for a few years including the Bourbonese Qualk / Hartmann split tape "Music While You Work". Released on the Italian ADN label back in 1985. I wanted to include the track "Meatrack" in the programme and then discovered this was on the vinyl compilation box set "Archive 1980 - 1986" released by Vinyl On Demand. A cleaner copy than the cassette so I play three tracks from this compilation. "Blackout" features the dulcet vocal tones of Nigel Ayers and is from the "Here We Go" compilation album released by Sterile Records in 1985. Support The Miners! Staying with Nigel Ayers and the Nocturnal Emissions. "Even The Good Times Are Bad" is from the album "Duty Experiment", a compilation of demos and studio out-takes from 1980 - 1984. 

Tone Generator + The Body Without Organs is ex SPK member Dominic Guerin. The track here is from the recent release "Normalisation Of Response" and features samples from old SPK recordings. Two singles from the "On This Day" feature. Firstly "Shack Up" by A Certain Ratio. A cover of the 1975 classic by Banbarra, released in 1980 by Factory Benelux. Secondly "Ends With The Sea" by BC Gilbert & G Lewis released a year later on 4AD Records. 

Records as memories. 

The debut LP (12"EP ?) by C Cat Trance will always bring back memories of my time in Manchester, living in Hulme Crescents. John Nash Crescent to be precise living with my then girlfriend Trace. I remember getting the record from a sale of ex-library records at Manchester University and it hardly came off the turntable for the time we were together. I recently found a decent copy for sale (trawling again) and grabbed it. Tunes I hadn't heard for over 30 years but were still locked their in the brain now swirling out of the speakers at MuhMur HQ with visions of Hulme, sunshine days and Trace. Who was it that said 'Happy memories leave a bitter taste'? C Cat Trance were formed by John Rees Lewis in 1982 when he left Nottingham funksters Medium Medium. This record was recorded in Newark. The first four tracks are from the 33RPM side, "Hypnotised" is from the 45RPM side. Hearing "Hypnotised" again made me pull out my DJ license that allows me to play the 'same title different song' card.

The Chris & Cosey / CTI track is from the double compilation album "Out There - A Thread Through Time" released in 1994 on the Scottish Pi Recordings label. "Dancing Ghosts" was recorded in 1983. Sleeve notes claim that this was the first recordings of "Acid House", they obviously don't know about the track "WSB Is Very Clever" recorded by Diet Of Worms in a shed in North Hykeham featuring the sound of a Roland SH101 & Roland Drumatix ... and of course samples of the great man himself! When I get time I'll dig the tape out and play it!

MuhMur Radio Broadcast July 22 2021

 The broadcast begins with a fifteen minute piece from Lausanne based artist Francisco Meirino. "Something Always Remains" follows on from the excellent "A New Instability" album that was released in January this year by Helen Scarsdale Agency. "Something Always Remains" is a C30 cassette put out by UK's Research Laboratories label. Released in an edition of 35 copies only the cassette is now unavailable from the label but a download version is still available via the Francisco Meirino page. https://franciscomeirino.bandcamp.com/album/something-always-remains

One of my first exposures to cassette noise was by Kapotte Muziek. In 1986 I contributed to the 2xC90 compilation "Wolfsangel" released by Peter Zincken's Nihilistic Recordings label. The track that preceded mine (IBF : "Ka (Version)" ... a remixed version from the track on the "Hammers Used As Hearts" cassette) was a slab of untitled noise by Kapotte Muziek. I was hooked from then on. Kapotte Muziek was created in 1984 by Frans de Waard (as regular listeners will know Frans is no stranger to the MuhMur Radio playlist) and Christian Nijs. Christian Left in 1987 and Frans carried on Kapotte Muziek as a solo project collaborating with other artists for live performances and recordings. "Radiation" is from the 1994 CD album "Verder". "Verder" is compiled of four pieces. "Radiation" is using / recycling material from Telepherique. Other artists' noises used are from Merzbow, Agencement and G.X. Jupitter-Larsen. It was released by Nicolas Malevitsis's Harsh Dept. Productions label. Nicoals know operates the excellent Rekem Records label. 

Muckrackers are a three piece Industrial / Experimental Rock band from the Grand Est region of North East France. They have been releasing their own brand of metal percussive industrial noise for the last twenty years, usually on their own Les Forges Alliées imprint. They have just released two pieces on vinyl, the 7" "CDLF" and the 10"EP "AntiFer", both are limited pressings and available from their band camp page : https://muckrackers.bandcamp.com "Au Six Tonnes" is from the 7" single and "AntiFer #3" is from the 10" collaborative EP with Flutwacht, Igor!!M and Justine Ribière. Flutwacht (aka Daniel Simon) is a regular collaborator with the Muckrackers. Justine Ribière is from the French noise project Machinalis Tarantulae. 

A lot was said about Paul Chain and the double album "Paul Chain Is Dead Volume 1" on the last ReMuhMuration post, so I won't go into it here, other than to say that the track "Domino" is from this release. 

Snatch Tapes began in 1979, releasing DIY experimental and electronic music by the likes of Storm Bugs, David Jackman, Alien Brains, Sea Of Wires and Lemon Kittens. The label was created by Philip Sanderson of Storm Bugs. After seven cassette releases in 1981 Snatch tapes went into hibernation, resurfacing again in 2000 with the Philip Sanderson solo CDR ""Lay-By Lullaby". 

Since 2000 Snatch Tapes have released new and old material by Storm Bugs as well as solo recordings by Philip Sanderson under his own name and his Ice Yacht moniker. "Not Even My Closest Friends" carries on from last years "Rumble Of The Ruins". "Idol Ferry" is from this album which Philip describes as "Baroque Pop". Snatch Tapes were one of the pioneers of DIY experimental  / industrial / post-punk / noise cassette labels, alongside Deleted Records,  NB Records, Fuck Off Tapes and Don't Dance - Collide Tapes* (and others). All are mentioned in the new autobiography of NB Records mandarin and member of The Door And The Window; Bendle. 

So for the final minutes of the broadcast I try and give a 'small' soundtrack to the book. I do thoroughly recommend getting hold of the book.

I had a friend with low morals and an Amazon UK account to buy me a copy. Hopefully there are other sellers by now ... same as with the autobiography "The Luxury Of Dreams" by Mark Automaton (aka Mark Lancaster of The Instant Automatons), only available via Amazon. Marks' book is also a great read with the bulk of the story being about his post Automatons life. He says in the book, if you want the in depth and detailed story of DIY cassette culture of the late 1970's then read Bendle's book.  

I have a feeling I heard The Instant Automatons before The Door And The Window. The Automatons were from 'up the road' in Keelby (North Lincolnshire) and I used to write to them, buy their Deleted Records tapes and the excellent "Peter Paints His Fence" EP. So, it was either through connection with Deleted Records or maybe hearing the "Subculture" single on John Peel's radio programme that I wrote to NB Records and started getting their stuff too. I remember I always got replies from Nag - the other half of The Door And The Window ... and as it turns out the inspiration for the Cabaret Voltaire song "Nag Nag Nag". The book is full of great stories, snapshots of how life was in late 1970's London. The camaraderie that existed, seemingly evolving and revolving around Throbbing Gristle live performances and the London Musician's Collective. Characters like Steve Stapleton, Fritz Catlin, Colin Potter, Mark Perry (who was a member of TDATW for a while), Karl Blake, Dick Wilts and David Toop all weave in and out. It is a truly great read and an unputdownable book. 

Apart from tracks by The Door And The Window and The Instant Automatons I slipped in pieces by 391. 391 was the solo project of Mark Automaton. "Prisoner In The Living Room" comes from the Deleted Records compilation tape "Deleted Funtime" (pardon for the quality .. it is an old cassette). The Mark Perry + Dennis Burns song is akin from the "Music Death" 7" on NB Records. I remember buying this one direct from NB Records and getting a free copy of the Alternative TV LP "Vibing Up The Senile Man (Part One)" with it. The postage was more than what I paid for the 7" alone. The 23 Skidoo track is their debut 7" and has Fritz on bass ...

... and I put in The Fall because it was produced by Grant Showbiz (aka Grant Cunliffe) and he also produced The Door And The Window's LP "Detailed Twang". 

The "Green Blob" is a song about Bendle and Nag's landlord and is from the retrospective album "Dr. Egg" a collection of live recordings from 1983 to 1987. The track has part time TDATW member Tony Clough who in 1979 featured on the first Snatch Tapes compilation tape "Snatch Tapes 1". It's like coming round and completing the circle.

MuhMur Radio Broadcast July 8 2021.

 

The broadcast begins with Side A of the new cassette album from Modelbau. The sound is a slight departure from Modelbau's usual textured drones, ambient fields and noise releases. Here Frans de Waard creates a soundscape by layering and cutting, cross-fading and shuffling sounds from shortwave radio broadcasts. Leda is the solo project of Neutral guitar / synth player Sofie Herner. (Sofie is also part of the Gothenburg supergroup Enhet För Fri Musik). I first heard Leda about seven years ago with the excellent "City / Clear" 7" single on I Dischi Del Barone, this was followed a couple of years later by another classic 7" "Japanese Key" still on IDDB. The two tracks here are from the LP "Våren" a new re-issue on the US Grapefruit Records label. It's a vinyl re-issue of the eponymous 2014 cassette put out (and impossible to find) by Ingen Våg. Grapefruit records, operated by singer / songwriter Simon Joyner, seem to have tapped in to the Gothenburg underground sound with earlier releases / re-issues by Neutral and Blod. A couple of weeks ago I celebrated the release of Dome's first album "Dome One". This made me dig out all my Dome Records releases but I couldn't find space for "Drop" a 7" by AC Maria AC. (A.C. = Angela Conway). Released in 1981 and played very very often here at Hartop Towers, please excuse the snap, crackle and pop. 

Any release by Brighton based agent provocateur Duncan Harrison is worth an ear. Last year he put out "Slow Lightning", a split LP with Ian Murphy and it's a strong (very strong) contender for album of the year. Since leaving Plurals (in or around) 2013 Duncan has released a plethora of experimental soundscapes / Soundart and Musique Concret on labels such as Chocolate Monk, Sound Holes, Beartown Records, Sham Repro,  Index Clean and Research Laboratories to name but a few. The new album is called "Fires.Serif" on Regional Bears. The piece "15" is from this tape. It's available direct from the label here : https://regionalbears.bandcamp.com/album/fires-serif

Hands up. Who has heard of Paul Chain before? "Paul Chain Is Dead Volume 1" came to me via the label Horn Of Plenty. Horn Of Plenty is a London based label run by Nick Hamilton. Nick used to run a label called Vittelli (who released "Nocturnes" a great LP by Matthew P. Hopkins) and have a show on Resonance FM. Horn Of Plenty have been releasing quality since 2018 and also run a small (and reasonably priced) mail order distribution. It's worth a look. https://www.horn-of-plenty.org . But back to Paul Chain ... Paul Chain is Italian musician / composer Paolo Catena. In 1977 Paolo formed the Doom Metal group 'Death S.S.'. Death S.S. is an abridgement of 'In Death Of Steve Sylvester'. 

In 1979 Paul disbanded Death S.S. to concentrate on his solo work working under the banner of Paul Chain Group and Paul Chain Violet Theatre. In 1983 Paul started performing and recording as (simply) Paul Chain. "Paul Chain Is Dead Volume 1" contains tracks recorded between 1983 and 2003, some are unreleased pieces some being tracks not re-issued in thirty years. I have really 'gotten in to' this double LP over the past few weeks. Progressive Psychedelic Experimentalism as I call it.PPE, and that's something we can't get enough of these days. And to quote the promo blurb that came with the release:

"Paul Chain's story is one of spiritual and musical (mis)adventure, self-sabotage, and unwanted cult-status.All of this led Paolo to disown the Paul Chain catalogue when he announced the artistic death of Paul Chain in 2003"

In 2009 to ex Smell & Quim members (although I don't think they were ever in the group at the same time) joined brains to become Early Hominids. The project lasted until 2017 and now four years after their demise Paul Walsh and Neil Campbell have (self) released a CDR called "Circular Dredge / Plexus Vulgar". Two ex members of THU20, Frans de Waard and Joseph Smolders make up the project WaSm. "Twee Seven" is from their latest CD release "Twee". Released on the German Attenuation Circuit label copies are available here : https://emerge.bandcamp.com/album/twee . The Michael Esposito piece is from the 2013 release "L'enveloppe" a book by Guillaume Belhomme / "In The Silence Of A Watery Grave" a 3" CD by M. Esposito. It's part of the ongoing Lenka Lente series of books with accompanying sounds (soundtracks?) which has included artists such as Nurse With Wound, Andrew Lilles, Daniel Menche, Lee Renaldo and Vomir amongst others. The piece is subtitled EVP Case file 'PAW068', and this is what Michael says about it : 

"The recording was captured on the fourth of July 2013 in Dyer (Indiana) during the last, fleeting trails of fireworks disappearing into the night. The voices that were accidentally picked up are not from this world and seem to angrily remind us that all celebrations must end and they have to be let go so they can be reborn in the next year".

Cold Spring Records have released recordings by William S. Burroughs and Brian Gysin on 12" vinyl. Originally released in 2012 on CD by the British Library, that album contains recordings and readings from 1963 through to 1982.

Little bit of pre-amble. 

Apologies for no playlist for the broadcast on June 10. The playlist is in the comments section of the MixCloud archive. Time was my enemy on this one. 

Regular listeners / followers might have noticed that there is no longer a MuhMur Radio on Facebook. Whether this is temporary or not I have yet to decide. If truth be told MuhMur Radio was never meant to be on Facebook, or any social media platform really. Back in the mid-noughties I joined Facebook, my wife (Tamsin) was on there and as I had moved to the Deep South and contact with friends was becoming more remote I decided to sign up, give my privacy away and share photographs of our days out with the kids with my family and friends ... but I didn't really like it .. so after a couple of years I de-activated my account. I then decided to start the 'MuhMur' Blog where I could write about records, gigs, Dieter Müh, secondhand record shops etc etc. In 2012 I started to broadcast on SoundArt Radio (102.5FM), live broadcasts every other Thursday night ... I would talk about the programme on the MuhMur Blog as this is MuhMur Radio. Straight from the off I archived each programme on MixCloud. Back in 2012 / 2013 I used to follow (broadcast after) a prog-rock music show called "Honey For You Rears" hosted by Andy "Hatter" Howard, he would boast about his listenership and freebies he was sent etc and told me to get the MuhMur Radio 'out there' with a Facebook page and Twitter page and then folk could interact with you live ... all that kind of nonsense, but being who I am I took his advice and re-joined Facebook and started a Twitter account. The Twitter account didn't last long. After a couple of days I had "followers" in triple figures who were all posting shite on my feed, folk I didn't know and have never met were using my platform. That had to stop! When trying to set up a MuhMur Radio Facebook page I discovered that my profile from 2009 was still there with all the old profile photographs and information so it was simpler just to re-activate the old account and set-up a MuhMur Radio page. 

By this time my old server, Freeserve, had ceased to exist and I had to get a new one, choosing gmail. Unfortunately I could not retrieve my MuhMur Blog for reasons of forgotten passwords and losing the old fsnet Email address. So I set up 'ReMuhMuration' to write about records, gigs and post playlists for the broadcasts ... This year, this year though it has been different. Over the past few months block advertising has been happening on my News Feed page and I cannot get rid of it. Daily notifications popping up on the MuhMur Radio page telling me to promote and boost my "product". I could reach thousands of new 'customers'. I know the old adage that with the internet if something is "free" then you are the product (and ... cue The Desperate Bicycles) I used to say it to Tamsin all the time but now it has reached a point of it really getting to me, getting under my skin. So it has had to stop. The de-activation is only temporary but it may lead to a full stop. I apologise to the people who followed and supported MuhMur Radio on Facebook but hopefully you all understand. I can always be contacted via this page or the MixCloud Archive or muhmur.radio@gmail.com is my preferred mode of contact. 

MuhMur Radio was never meant to be broadcast to the thousands anyway. I have spent most of my time and activities since the late 1970's acting below the radar, beneath the awareness. I would rather there be 40 or 50 folk who really enjoy what I play than 950 or so listeners who don't. Does that make sense?

The reason for playing extracts from the LP "Dome 1" by Dome was because it was released on June 24 1980. Dome were the duo Graham Lewis & Bruce Gilbert ex of Wire. It's an album that has never left my side since release.

Sick Days.

 

Sick Days is the sound project of Canadian artist Jeff Sinibaldi. A new name to me and certainly one I wouldn't have chanced upon if it wasn't for their recent releases on the Finnish Hyster Tapes label. It is just over 20 years ago when myself (as part of Dieter Müh) and Putrefier toured the pubs, clubs, sinkholes and dives of Europe and wherever we turned up at the venue there was "Sick On The Bus" graffiti all over the backstage areas, so I have always avoided bands with "Sick" in their name. (Sickness being an exception because Chris is a fine fellow!). Anyway ... 

Sick Days have released an eponymous cassette on the Hyster Tapes imprint. Two pieces spanning 45 minutes. The first is a 30 minute or so piece called "Cold Tones". An improvisation of layered passive frequencies and loops that lead into a sense of isolation, a sense of abandonment in the tones which leads to the visualisation of white, cold bleakness of an Artic tundra. I do get to listen to a lot of releases pertaining to this genre, the genre of Drone, Experimentalism, Field Recordings, Looped Tones etc and Sick Days do rise above.

"Point Abino" (That may not be the title .. the typewriter Hyster HQ use needs a new ribbon) is some sort of 'hydrophonic' piece based on the rhythm and flow of water. The sound of waves lapping upon a pebbled shoreline. The burbling and gurgling of H ² 0. The running time of this piece is 13 minutes but that's because the tape just ends ... I have a feeling this an excerpt from a much longer piece. 

The only other Sick Days release I can find (Discogs as research) is a 2015 eponymous CDR on the Vacancy label. Jeff Sinibaldi is the owner of the Vacancy label. Whether or not this tape is an edited version of the CDR I do not know, the CDR was limited to 18 copies only and I would imagine long sold out by now.

Hyster Tapes started in 2003, at first it was planned to be a cassette only label using recycled cassette tapes for releases. Running along similar lines to the 'Recycled' series on RRRecords. The label is operated by Heikke (aka Plaa from Grey Park / Nolls). Their first release was Dieter Müh "Doin' It Dresden Style". A 40 minute recording of a live performance at the AZ Conni in Dresden (when we seemed to be following Sick On The Bus everywhere!). I came up with the title as a kind of homage to two of my favourite bands; Slaughter & The Dogs and Swell Maps. It was then four years before Hyster Tapes released a follow up with a release by XXIII, followed by their first compilation "Your Own Shadow Blocks The Light" featuring XXIII, Grey Park, Culver, YuriYuri and others. Since 2007 Hyster Tapes has moved up a gear with releases with tapes from Re-Clip, Uton, D.D.Dobson, Dear Beloved Henry, Zoe Polanski, Leitmotiv Limbo, Keijo and Grey Park themselves. Hyster Tapes have also collaborated with Finnish counterparts Ikuissus to release vinyl LPs by A Handful Of Dust, Varropas and Grykë Pyje. 

Over the years I have really enjoyed discovering new sounds and artists through Hyster Tapes. Sick Days being added to that list.

The programme begins with a track from "The Saturnine Broadcasts", a double CD album by Inade and Circular. Recorded live on June 6 2020 in Leipzig. (From the CD notes) "In June 2020 Inade and Circular were invited to join an independent broadcasting network and perform an online concert with a new conceptual live series called 'Art & Paranoia'. We decided to prepare a label showcase and perform some exclusive live sets with some classic tracks that have never been performed. The majority of our releases have always been marked by contradictions in their depiction, invoking an expansive array of meanings; encompassing positive, creative facets - such as depth, imagination, and bursts of genius - as well as dark qualities - including gloominess, despondency and isolation. Sensory Leakage are a label based in London. Since 2019 they have been releasing cassettes in the "Zener" series. Artists such as Alison Cotton, Greening Lambourne, Tippex Christ and Quiet Clapping (no .. me neither .. what a rabbit hole to climb down). Number 27 in the Zener series is by Grey Frequency. No stranger to the MuhMur Radio playlist Grey Frequency is the solo project of audio / visual artist Gavin Morrow. 'Zener_27' features two tracks, "Kirlian Aura" is from this cassette. Enhet För Fri Müsik (like Grey Frequency) are no strangers to the MuhMur Radio playlist. They are, what used to be called back in the 'prog days' a supergroup. An Asia, a Paige, Ashton Lord, a Travelling Willburys of the Gothenburg underground. EFFM are comprised of Dan Johansson (Sewer Election), Gustaf Dicksson (Blod), Hugo Randulv (Typical Girls), Matthias Andersson (Arv & Miljö) and Sofie Herner (Neutral). The three tracks here are from their latest album "Ömhet & Skilsmässa".

I have been catching up on some old Nocturnal Emissions sounds of late and last month I took the short trip to Lostwithiel to visit Nigel and Lesley and stroll along the beach at Par and talk about old NE recordings and live performances. I never leave Emission Control without a treat and this time I left with a copy of the 10"EP "Imaginary Time". "Skin Deep" is from this EP.

"Skin Deep" gives me the chance to use my DJ license so I can play the same title / different song game with "Skin Deep" by The Passions. It's a shame I don't have a copy of The Stranglers single "Skin Deep" but that was released in 1984 and that was well past their sell by date. The Chris & Cosey track is from a new 7" that comes with issue 76 of "Electronic Sound" magazine. "Jamming, Tottenham 1982" is the B-Side to a remix of the classic "October Love Song". The track is an unreleased improvised piece recorded just after the demise of Throbbing Gristle - it still has a certain 'Gristleness' about it. Chris mentions in the accompanying interview "We used to play together for hours in our studio in Crouch End and when we moved and when we moved to our house in Tottenham. It was like a form of therapy, driving out the post-traumatic stress of being in Throbbing Gristle". The 808 State track is from the compilation album "Edward Not Edward". An album featuring the cream of Hulme and Moss-Side artists from the late 1980's all covering songs by Edward Barton. 

The "On This Day" feature is Eater and their debut EP "Thinking Of The USA" released in 1977 on The Label label. A great read is the Andy Blade autobiography, a great document of the birth of punk music in London. Published by Cherry Red Books.

"Airborne" is the new album from Angel Simitchiev and Linus Schrab. It's the first time Angel has released under his own name ... outside of his dark ambient project MyTrip. Linus Schrab is a musician based in Malmö (Sweden). "Initiation" is from this album. Copies are available from the Amek bandcamp page here : https://amekcollective.bandcamp.com The Soviet France track is from the "What Is Not True" album released in 1993 on Charrm Records. The album is three live tracks recorded at The Leadmill in Sheffield and The Old Vic in Nottingham. I was fortunate to be at both gigs (the latter being arranged by John Everall and Teresa Mills and also featured Lull on the bill). The CD has been re-issued by Vinyl On Demand as a triple sided double album. 

I have (recently) been grabbed by the sound of Himukalt after hearing them (her) on the Helen Scarsdale Agency ten tapes compilation "On Corrosion". "Panic Attack" is from last years album "Sex Worker II" on the German Total Black label. 

"The American Redhead" is from the recent re-issue of the 2018 album "Knife Through The Spine" on Cold Spring Records. The track isn't on the original album (released by Malignant records), it's 'Bonus Material'. I have talked about Himukalt in the past, so will not go in to detail here ... but the album is available here : https://coldspring.co.uk There will be more Himukalt on the next broadcast!                  The Lustmord track is from the album "First Reformed" a soundtrack to the movie of the same name. 

Another regular on the MuhMur Radio playlist is John Duncan. "Homecoming" is from the recently released album "Soft Eyes" in Ideal Recordings. The album also features Stefano Pilia on guitar and the collaboration album "Try Again" (Duncan & Pilia) will feature on the next broadcast. The sleeve / artwork on the LP has a very 1990's '4AD' vibe to it ... I did think it was probably by someone at the 23Envelope studios, it is by Gary Jo Gardenhire, an American visual artist living in Italy.

John's voice always reminds of the voice of David Thomas, so I put Pere Ubu in their next. "Not Happy" was a stand alone single from 1981. 

A MuhMur Radio Broadcast would not be a MuhMur Radio Broadcast without something by Frans de Waard. Although not directly involved (with the music) here, Friends In Low Places featured on the compilation tape "Katacombe Volume 3" released in 1984 on Korm Plastics and Schrei Records. Frans compiled the cassette for Schrei Records. The cassette also features Het Zweet, De Fabriek, Kapotte Muziek and Y Create amongst others. Friends In Low Places were from Leiden, and the project of Matz Decay. They (he) were known also as Love Choir. Earlier this year Staaltapes re-issued the tape on their Korm Plastics D label. The Hunting Lodge track is from the LP "Shack". A vinyl & CD combination featuring recordings from 1988 - 1992. This put me in mind of the Dormanuu track ... so I slipped it on next. 

Dormanuu were active for only a short length of time (1983 - 1985). They released a trio of singles and one album for Illuminated Records before disbanding. The guitarist was Mark Tinley, older brother to Adamski. The Camberwell Now track is from the compilation CD "All's Well". "Daddy Needs A Throne" first appeared on the 1985 compilation cassette "Ritual : Magnetic North" on Touch. It was recorded at the same time as the first LP "The Ghost Trade", but didn't quite fit on the album ... so, it was used here. 

Every time I read an article , review or whatever about Himukalt the project gets compared with Puce Mary. Single white female syndrome probably - either that or laziness, or the author has never heard "Information Overload Unit" or the catalogue of Gaya Donadio. Anyway, I dug out some of the Puce Mary releases I own ... and have come to the conclusion that perhaps the comparisons aren't as lazy as I thought.

Bu.d.d.a.

 

This month sees a new release by the project Bu.d.d.a. Bu.d.d.a. is the project of Chris Sigdell & Sascha Stadlmeier.

I first came aware of the work of Chris back in the late 1990's and his work as Níd through the Tochnit Aleph released "Tarm-Stad" cassette. A friend at the time had some Mercury 4ºf singles .. but I don't really remember them standing out ... Níd were a trio of Chris, Jürgen Eberhard and Oswin Czerwinski. Jürgen and Oswin were releasing as Feine Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim at this time. Chris began his BºTong project in 2005 after the demise of doom rock band Phased. In 2012, a couple of years after releasing the CDR "Ov Elf And Haarp" on the Attenuation Circuit label, BºTong released a split album with Attenuation Circuit label boss Sascha's project Emerge. It's one of those albums where artists swap sound samples and remix / reinterpret each others sounds. 

In 2018 Chris and Sascha began working as Bu.d.d.a. (Bund Des Dritten Auges - The Order Of The Third Eye). "All Der Guten Dinge Drei" was released in 2019 by Attenuation Circuit, a document of a live improvised performance at Màgia Rosa in Barcelona that took place in 2018. And now we have "The Mourning Of The Midnight Diner's Menu Card" (A title that sounds like it should be a King Crimson live bootleg from 1970). 

Recorded last year live in Karlsruhe (a place I have played live with BºTong not so long ago ... at the University), "The Mourning Of The Midnight Diner's Menu Card" is a 37 minute piece of improvised electronics. It plays like a audio sci-fi novel, a novel in three parts. The first part has empty, spacial sounds built with plucked electric strings and a bowed violin. A lunar landscape creating a disconnect is built from manipulated contact microphones and broken electronics. Lost commands, alien voices, pleas from the space station accentuate the loneliness. Around 20 minutes in to the journey the sound turns intense dense and more claustrophobic as if a sense of panic or confusion is aboard. The final third is more calm, realisation of the situation with breath sounds and a sound more natural to earth. Creatures and water ... lost in a forest, alone on an alien planet. It's a really good journey. Two masters of improvised electronic / experimental music at the top of their game. (I would have called it "Alien Soundtracks", but I think there's a band who beat me to it)! 

There's a studio album out now too that features a shorter version of "The Mourning Of The Midnight Diner's Menu Card" released on the Spanish Marbre Negre label called "Erste Opfergaben".

The programme begins, ends and has an intermission with "Plegadis Flacinellus" by Brighton based project Creep Of Paris. Creep Of Paris is Thomas LaRoche. Released last year, the cassette is packaged with a small booklet and a vial of massaging oil (included purposely to rub into your feet whilst listening tot he tape, unfortunately my copy came sans oil). On April 1 this year Fossil Aerosol Mining Project released a four track EP available for a few hours only via their website. "An Invocation Of Alice" is from this EP.

2020 was a busy year for release by Alice Kemp. The German label Fragment Factory put out the  cassette "Songs In the Key Of NO" and the Dutch label Dead Mind Records put out "Sweetly My Blacken Doll". Alice also contributed to the Amplify 2020 project which posted free downloads on a daily basis throughout the year. "Sweetly My Blacken Doll" came out in November last year. A 20 minute piece packaged in a small box with art cards and a companion made from Beech Wood, Nylon, Human Hair, Waxed & Dyed Threads and 'Secrets'. (I must admit to not opening my companion yet!).

Andrew Quitter started making and releasing noises in the late 1990's. A prolific noise artist he has released under the names of Regosphere, Ignorant Eyes, Normal Police and Psychic Rape Defence Unit amongst others and collaborated with the likes of Harold Shipman, Juice Machine, Contagious Orgasm and Werewolf Jerusalem. Andrew also releases under his own name, AQ releases have a more darker edge, room for experimentation, drone textures. "Mountain Hymns For City Rats" is a collection of 

pieces from split and compilation releases. It's a CDR on Andrew's own DumpsterScore label. http://dumpsterscore.org/outnow.html I also recommend the new Contagious Orgasm / Regosphere cassette "Hospital Emissions" on DumpsterScore. 

Förlag För Fri Musik is one of the most essential labels releasing quality records for the past five or six years. It's the home for projects such as Treasury Of Puppies, Blod, Arv & Miljö, Monokultur, Leda and Enhet För Fri Musik amongst others. A couple of months ago they put out two albums on the same day ... Astrid Øster Mortensen's "Gro Mig En Blomst" and Hugo Randulv's "Radio Arktis - Samlade Ljud Från Den Norra Polcirkeln". The two Randulv tracks here are from this new LP. Hugo also plays with Amateur Hour (I wonder if they're a Sparks tribute band) and Typical Girls (Slits?). Hugo is also part of Enhet För Fri Musik, who also have a new album out and selections will be played on the next MuhMur Radio Broadcast. (May 27).

"On This Day" features two classics. Firstly The Phones Sportsman Band "I Really Love You" 7"EP on Rather Records. Phones Sportsman is an alias of David Barrington. In the early 1970's Barrington formed the Swell Maps in Birmingham (UK) alongside Nikki Sudden, Richard Earl, Kevin Godfrey, Jowe Head and John "Golden" Cockrill. "I Really Love You" was Phones' only solo release - it does feature a great cover of Slade's "Get Down And Get With It". Barrington retired from the music industry to become a geologist. The EP can be found on Discogs etc ... 

A year later on May 13 1981 Au Pairs (also from Birmingham) released their debut LP "Playing With A Different Sex". "Armagh" is from this album.

"Fontelautus" is the second album, in a series of five, of solo releases by David Tibet. Originally released last year on the Cashen's Gap imprint as a limited lathe cut 12", last month HomAleph re-issued the album

The Clock DVA tracks are from the (timeless) classic "Thirst" LP. Released in 1981 on Fetish Records. 

For the past thirty years Dutch artist / author / musician has been writing about music for publications such as Vital Weekly, Record Collector and The Wire. Earlier this year a collection of his writings on his discovery of obscure vinyl, cassette and vanity pressings was published by Korm Plastics. "Wondersound" is a fantastic read, probably one of the best books written about music that I have read. It's fascinating in detail, written with humour and personality talking about the releases of and the discovery of such artists as Vagina Dentata Organ, The Gerogerigegege, Princess Tinymeat, Whitehouse and The Legendary Pink Dots as well as his love for the kitsch sounds of Japanese Erotic Pop and singing actresses from the sixties. Anorak in detail and unputdownable. (I am a notoriously slow reader and I ate this book in three days!). The book came with a download code for the track "Boy In Love". Freek has played with such luminaries as Andrew Lilles and Frans de Waard (as half of Beequeen) ad also spent time as one of The Residents. (the story is included in "Wondersound").

Man's Hate Productions was operated out of Peterborough by Andi Xport. The 'ISC' series was a great document of home produced cassette releases between 1985 - 1987. '#10' also includes my project of old - Ideas Beyond Filth as well as Stress, Do Easy (early Lawrence Burton project), Agencement, F/I, A Split Second, Rudolf's Rache (a German post punk band that features Tarkatak's Lutz Pruditsch on vocals) and Len Liggins amongst others. Tonights programme features two faces / slices of Frans de Waard. (The Man That Never Sleeps ... Or Eats Bread Apparently). The first piece is "Tilos" by Freiband. Freiband is one of many solo projects of Frans'. Beginning in 2002 Freiband was inspired by the tape-scratching of Asmus Tietchens on his "Daseinsverfehlung" CD, but using an entirely digital context. Using recordings that were made for an upcoming Beequeen release, (Beequeen being the duo of Freek Kinkelaar & Frans de Waard) a recording that has lots of guitars, drums and keyboards, Frans started to rework the sounds by scratching the hard disc. The result is a warm, glitchy pop music where the original instruments used are barely recognisable, and the sound is entirely electronic. "Tilos" is from the 2011 cassette album "At Home At Last - Six Songs Seek Shelter" on the Beam Ends label. Beam Ends is a small label run by Freek. The second slice of Frans is the piece "Within" by Modelbau. Released earlier this year on the hugely collectable Falt label. The cassette edition of this release is unfortunately all sold but digital copies are still available on the Falt Bandcamp page : https://falt.bandcamp.com/album/within-without 2022 will see a book on the first ten years of Modelbau.

It is always a joy to receive a surprise through the post and the new CD by Heimito Künst is such that joy. Utilizing synthesisers, magnetic tapes, percussion, strings and field recordings and recording live with environmental microphones (between 2019 - 2019) Heimito creates a deep psychedelic journey with recurring tropes. The recordings were mastered in 2020 by Simon Balestrazzi (Kirlian Camera / T.A.C.) and released on the newly emerging Dissipatio label. https://dissipatio.bandcamp.com It is worth noting that Heimito Künst is the name of a character - a mentally-impaired Neo nazi thug from Vienna - in Chilean author Roberto Bolaño's novel "The Savage Detectives" and track titles from this CD relate to stories and characters in this tome. The plot thickens. 

The Leif Elggren piece is from a recent cassette release on the hugely collectable Research Laboratories label. "Only Criminals In Crowns Find Sanctuary" is limited to 25 copies packaged in a box with a tin crown and postcard. Paul Harrison of Expose Your Eyes and Howard Stelzer have collaborated on a new release with a title that is about as long as the CD. This releases is packaged within a hollowed out book. A few weeks ago I received a CD by Feine Trinkers Bei Pinkels Daheim that was stuck to a plate and a cassette by Modelbau that was packaged in a cardboard box that was the outer packaging - with name and address printed on etc, so each cassette was individual. 2021 is becoming the year of the 'art package'? In 1980 Snatch Tapes put out a cassette by Claire Thomas & Susan Vezey called "Reprint". (I think it was the last cassette release on Snatch Tapes until Ice Yacht's "Pill Box" in 2020). As time passed and myths and rumours to who exactly Claire & Susan were floated about the underground, it became apparent that "Reprint" is an album by Storm Bug(ger) Philip Sanderson. Claire & Susan being a clever ruse and pseudonym. In 2003 Anomalous Records reissued the cassette on CD with bonus tracks and crediting it all to Philip. "Bright Waves" is from this CD. 

One of my most memorable gigs from my youth was seeing Gary Numan on his "Pleasure Principle" tour at Friars in Aylesbury. September 1979, I had just left school with no qualifications and just saw a whole life of travelling up and down the country watching bands and buying records ahead of me. Support at this gig was Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and they were excellent. At this point they had just released their first single for DinDisc "Red Frame/White Light" and were still just a two-piece. "Messages" followed "On This Day" in 1980. 

In September 1980 OMD released "Enola Gay" and our affair ended. 

US Teens is Ashley Davies. Ashley has been delivering the goods since the late 1980's with bands such as Chemical Plant, Headbutt and Spectreman. I first heard Ashley's work as part of Project D.A.R.K. and their 'Excited By Gramophones' series. For the past few years Ashley has been living on the West Coast of USA where the US Teens gave birth. I did ask Ashley where the name came from ... "There was a reason I chose US Teens as the name, fucked if I can remember now tho! Something I heard on the radio when I was driving thru Beverley Hills". I don't know if this cassette is an "official" release.

Knone is another project from Ashley Davies. A duo with vocalist Andrea Croce. "An Exorcism" is from the album "Ritual And Ceremony" released on Radiowave Recordings. Both Knone and Radiowave are contactable through Facebook. 

Cent Ans De Solitude is Jean-Yves Millet, owner of the French label Les Nouvelles Propagandes. I was fortunate enough to perform live with C.A.D.S. in 2014. Along with Le Syndicat we played the El Diablo Club in Lille, France. The track "Des Visages Et Des Ruines" is from the LP of the C.A.D.S. live performance that evening. 

There are two versions, a vinyl version released by Force Majeure (a label operated by Stephané of Nuit Et Brouillard) and a CD version released on Les Nouvelles Propagandes. Both versions are available via Nuit Et Brouillard : http://www.nuitetbrouillard.com

The two Rovar17 pieces are from a split cassette with American performance artist The Three-Brained Robot. Rovar17 is Kálmán Pongrácz from Budapest. He is also part of the Royal Hungarian Noisemakers ensemble. Like Knone, contact is available through Facebook.
