MuhMur Radio Broadcast 17 February 2022.

 

This broadcast features two pieces by Frans deWaard's Modelbau project. The programme starts with "Caustic" a track from the cassette EP "Cataract". In 2014 Modelbau released on cassette for the first time since the project began in 2012. Following "Blade" on Barreuh Records, "Cataract" is a C30 on the German Licht-Ung label. "Cataract" was originally released to accompany two Modelbau performances / workshops in Leverkusen and Kail (August 2014). The copies sold over these two events have different sleeves to the 'official' Licht-Ung mail order release. A rarity I have yet to get my hands on. 

The Modelbau piece "Object Of The Attack" is from the compilation cassette "Blurred". The compilation also features Jeph Jerman, Licht-Ung, Emerge, Forgotten Ghost and The Rita amongst others. It's a beautifully packaged release that comes with an A5 'zine with interviews, photography and artwork by the participants. The compilation marks the 50th release by the German label. The "Cataract" cassette is long sold out (limited to 50 copies) but a download is still available from Licht-Ung via their bandcamp page.https://licht-ung.bandcamp.com. 2021 was a busy year for Swiss sound artist Francisco Meirino producing three of the finest releases from the year. The vinyl LP "A New Instability" on Helen Scarsdale Agency, the cassette "Something Always remains" on Thomas LaRoche's Research Laboratories label and the 4xCD collection (box) "The Process Of Significance" on Misanthropic Agenda. 2022 begins with the excellent album "Shattered Reel(m)s" on Edward Sol's Sentimental Productions label. The album was recorded throughout 2020 at Francisco's Shiver Mobile (Lausanne). The sound is created from 30 tape reel loops built upon using violin, piano, field recordings, synthesisers, voice and computer. As always Sentimental Productions have produced an excellent album with limited copies available in an 'art box' containing a reel to reel tape version of the CD along with an original tape loop that was used on the album. What can I write about Cabaret Voltaire that hasn't already been written? Every Cabaret Voltaire interview that has been in print since 1977 is included in the great new book "Cabaret Voltaire - A Collection Of Interviews 1977-1994". I am having a great time reading the interviews and playing my Cabaret Voltaire records as aid and reference. The book has been collated by Fabio Méndez, no pictures just words. A great read. The last few weeks I have been enjoying a few new books whilst listening to records. The Nigel Ayers "Electronic Resistance" book, the book by The Shend on his writing within The Cravats and (over Christmas) the book on The Fall "Extracate!". I am looking forward to the new book by Jowe Head, out on Feb 18 ... expect some Swell Maps tunes in March. I am having fun listening to Cheap Imitation. I managed to get their first vinyl release at the end of last year and now I want to hear everything. Before the 7" Cheap Imitation released three cassettes "No More Weekend" is the title track from their 2018 album on Oma333. 

Two releases feature in the "On This Day" section. The Passage released their first 7" on the Night & Day Ltd label, a label created for The Passage by Virgin Records. The Passage were a Manchester based group with fluctuating members with multi instrumentalist Dick Witts being the one constant member. Formed in 1978 as a three piece including The Fall's Tony Friel they released a brace of singles and an album on Object Music before creating Night & Day Ltd in 1981. They call it a day in 1983. Dick Wilts used to appear on the BBC music programme "The Oxford Road Show" and Granada TV's "What's On". A year later on February 17 1982 23 Skidoo released the seminal "7 Songs" (mini) LP. 

The album is produced by Genesis P-Orridge, Peter Christopherson and Ken Thomas. The album was released on Fetish Records, the London based label that started in 1978 by re-releasing Throbbing Gristle's "2nd Annual Report" album. I saw 23 Skidoo play live a few times around this time and remember them playing films / videos that were used by Throbbing Gristle. I play the (mini) LP in full here. 40 years on and it still sounds (funky) fresh. The LTM label have re-issued "7 Songs" as a double LP including the John Peel session from 1981 and their debut 12" "The Gospel Comes To New Guinea" (produced by Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire. Next month sees the release of a new album by The Dead Mauriacs. The album is called "Expedition" and is a collaboration between The Dead Mauriacs and Evan Crankshaw. Limited to only 300 copies it is available now (pre-order) at : https://akuphone.com/catalog/1C9Mu1EZFqoA#content. In anticipation I play a 2021 piece by The Dead Mauriacs. I don't know if it was a good idea to play the new single from Current 93. "Soft As The Sun" is a single-sided playable postcard, limited to 250 copies on the Greek Chrysallida label. It is only available from the Folklore & History Museum of Xanthi and unfortunately it snaps, skips, crackles and pops white a bit. The record does play better on my turntable at MuhMur HQ than it did on the studio decks. "Caresse" from the "LAShTAL" 12" comes to the rescue. 

In 1985 Frans deWaard at Kom Plastics compiled and released the compilation cassette "6x10=60 Vol.1". It featured Bands Berne Crematoire, Merzbow, Asod DVI, Commando Bruno, Falx Cerebri and Throw Me Your Finger. It was a limited run of 130 copies and came with a small tract. The following year Korm Plastics released volume 2 this time with Het Zweet, Coup de Grace, No Unauthorized, Hjarntortyr Med Slacktmaskins, Swimming Behaviour Of The Human Infant and Bourbonese Qualk. Again limited to 130 copies and this time packaged in a 'zip bag' with 24 art cards. Essential in the day ... and still essential now. The quality of the sound really stands out, it hasn't dated or lessened in effect. The projects included really were on top of their game at this point. And now the Staalplaat 'side label' Korm Plastics D have re-issued the two volumes in one box and included a booklet containing the original artwork from the tract and postcards. The Falx Cerebri (aka Graf Haufen) piece and the Het Zweet piece that ends the broadcast are from this compilation. I have a vague memory that Ron at RRRecords may have released these tapes in the U.S. but I may have that wrong ... I am always looking to fill the gaps in my Muckrackers collection and at the start of the year I managed to get a couple of albums from their back catalogue. "Regarde Et Prends Garde" was released in 2014 on their own L.F.A. label. Again, the style, the individual and unique style of Muckrackers industrial noise is at the forefront on this LP. Talking of filling gaps ... over the Christmas holiday I ventured to the new secondhand record shop Hussar Records in Pinhoe, Exeter and picked up some classic tunes by Sisters Of Mercy and Joy Division. My copy of "Unknown Pleasures" went beyond the snap, crackle and pop many moons ago so to grab a CD copy was most pleasurable. For some reason I find it difficult to buy the first four Sisters Of Mercy singles, mainly because of price (to me they are all 'ten bob singles') so I was grateful to get a copy of the awfully titled "Some Girls Wander By Mistake" CD.

A connection is made - I saw Sisters Of Mercy live on the same day I saw 23 Skidoo. 1981 at the Futurama 3 Festival in The Bingley Hall, Stafford. They had just released the "Damage Is Done" EP and really stood out ... I had never heard (of) them before and became a disciple for the next couple of years buying everything and seeing them live all over the north of England. 1984 they played Manchester University it was then I knew our time was over ...

It's really pleasing to see Phil Julian get physical. Over the past five years or so Phil has been putting his sounds out as download only files. "Young Person's Guide To Voice Job" is released in cassette format (as well as WAV format) on Dale Cornish's Vanity Publishing label. All pieces were recorded in 2018 using a corrupted user bank of a Yamaha TQ5 FM Midi Expander and resequenced in 2021. "Organ Needles" by The Anti Group is their first full album since 1994's "Burning Water". Over the past few years TAGc have been releasing a series of split releases and collaborations with the likes of Matar, Mikel Boyd and Obsolete Capitalism. I guess Adi Newton has been concentrating on his revitalised Clock DVA project. This album was originally planned for a 2020 release but CV-19 stalled the project. There are two versions on release, a limited CD version featuring two exclusive tracks and 10 double sided postcards designed by Ads and a USB / Tote Bag edition. The album features sounds / collaborations with Jack Dangers (Meat Beat Manifesto), David Knight (Five Or Six), Stephen Thrower (Coil), Jacques Beloiel (Entr'acte) and Michael Esposito amongst others. Re-Clip are from Finland and another project who now concentrate on download releases. I first came across their sound via the 2009 cassette album "Notes" on Hyster Tapes, and have been hooked ever since.  Re-Clip seem to put out extremely limited editions of self-pressed 7"'s once in a while .. Q&A are the improvisational / experimental duo of Quentin Rollet and Andrew Sharpley. Rollet is a French saxophonist who has collaborated with Nurse With Wound whilst Sharpley is a founding member of Stock, House & Walkman. I received a package of releases from Humanhood Recordings a few weeks back and the album "Heat On Earth" by PBK/Spybey/Butcher/Johnson was a great surprise. With Robin Spybey being involved the tracks have a kind of motorik pulse feel around them with electronics from PBK and treated saxophone by John Butcher. John Butcher is also part of the UK free jazz improvisational electronic troupe The Seen alongside Phil Julian. Travis Johnson adds a stringed drone to the pieces ... it's become a regular spin here at MuhMur HQ. Originally released in 2018, a second edition on cassette has now been issued. Last year Onewayness played a few selective live dates with Drekka. For these dates they put out a 'tour only' collaborative CDR. This alerted me to the presence of Onewayness and it's main protagonist Adam Holquist. Adam kindly mailed me a package of releases (including the 'tour only' CDR which I played in the last programme on January 20) that he has released on his own Onomastic label. Onewayness are based in Erie, Pennsylvania. Adam is a multi-instrumentalist using pianos, guitars and analog synthesisers to create a unique ambient drone sound. 'Vertonen is the work of Blake Edwards, a veteran of the Chicago noise and experimental scene. With close to 100 releases many of them published through his own Crippled Intellect Productions and Ballast imprints spread over several decades. Edwards has fine-tuned his craft of cryptically inclined, electronic invocations that might channel the raw brutality of industrial machinery or the existential claustrophobia of a submarner's voyage nearing its untimely end. There are numerous aesthetic facets to the Vertonen oeuvre - scabrously harsh noise, zoned out isolationism, roughly tactile cacophonies, polished smooth harmonics. Yet, much of the work is tied to a conceptual precision that informs if not agitates his sound to act'. (J. Haynes).

A couple of books were read over the Christmas holiday. "Rub Me Out" by The Shend was a good enough reason to reacquaint myself with the sound of The Cravats. "Rub Me Out" is a history of The Cravats inter-woven with The Shend's lyrics all explained and given purpose. There are also lyrics and stories from his later projects The Very Things and Grimetime. Other words in the book are written by (amongst others) Mick Mercer, Penny Rimbaud, Stewart Lee, Jello Biafra and Steve Underwood. (Just as an aside and totally unplanned the author/comedian/national treasure Stewart Lee is also a member of the UK free jazz improvisational electronic troupe The Seen). I was fortunate to meet The Shend once, in the queue for the buffet at Steve Underwood's wedding, we chatted briefly and I learnt that the first The Cravats LP was recorded in Torquay, a few miles from where I now live. A reformed The Cravats later played a blistering live set at the wedding ... I vaguely remember Mark Durgan's son playing drums with them for a bit ... I was very drunk at the time ...

In 1990 I moved from Manchester to York and started drinking in a pub called The York Arms. It's right next to the Minster (if it's still there). It was there whilst wearing my Psychic TV "Feast Of Flowering Light" T-Shirt that a man approached me to talk about all things Psychic TV. He called himself Fez and mentioned he was the drummer in local surf / psychedelic rock band Suicidal Flowers. Over the weeks we became drinking buddies and I got to see Suicidal Flowers live around York a few times - they usually played with a band called God's Little Monkeys who had ex-The Nightingales roadie Kev Cartwright in their ranks. Lovely chap. Anyway, it was Fez who asked if the then recently formed Dieter Müh would like to support Suicidal Flowers live at a venue called The Bonding Warehouse. I (naturally) agreed, but the gig was cancelled (I can't remember why ... perhaps the venue flooded? The Bonding Warehouse was always flooding as it sat on the River Ouse) but the idea of playing live was too tempting and Dieter Müh's first live performance happened later that year in 1994. If it wasn't for Fez perhaps we would have never played live, certainly not in York where Colin Potter introduced himself and offered time in his ICR studio. Sliding doors and all that ... anyway, Pre Suicidal Flowers Fez was the drummer in The Village Idiots. The track here is from their one and only 7" "Ugly!". Ramblin' Johnny Stomachpump's whereabouts remains a mystery.

The "On This Day" section features the 7" "Eiseger Wind" by Liliput. Liliput were formed in Zurich in 1978 using the name Kleenex. They released a couple of singles on the Rough Trade Records label before changing their name to avoid legal battles with the tissue manufacturers. Liliput split in 1983. Around the same time that Kleenex played live in Lincoln's Drill Hall (along with The Raincoats and Spizz Energi), Fashion played at AJ's. It must have been 1979 ... I've always loved the single "Citinite". I heartedly recommend band member Luke James' memoir "Stairway to Nowhere". "This Jungle" comes from the newly released collection "Church" by John Foxx. "Church" is comprised of studio outtakes and demo recordings from the time of "The Garden", it was released to coincide with the 40th anniversary pf John Foxx's 1981 album. 

"Gods And Guns" by Savage Republic is from the new LP "Meteora". It's a lathe cut album, but also available on CD on the Gusstaff Records imprint. https://gusstaff.com.

A few weeks ago I heard the project The Wyndham Research Institute on the radio programme "The Institute Of Spectra-Sonic Sounds". I hunted down the track they played, it was from the "Concise Illustrated History Of....." cassette. I contacted the label HREA'M Recordings and discovered that the main member of TWRI also had a project called Bolivian Fireships. Bolivian Fireships are J.G. Sparkes and James Buchanan and they're based in Stockholm. "Thank You For Not Smoking (The New Emphatic Remix)" is from the cassette "Translations / Reinterpretations" and "Border Crossings" is from the CDR (imaginatively) called "Untitled". Both albums are on HREA'M Recordings.

MuhMur Radio Broadcast January 20 2022.

 

MuhMur Radio returns after a six week (or so) hiatus. The planned annual 'Festive Four Hour Feast Of Fun' never materialised. There are reasons, but the reasons become excuses ... and I don't like excuses so I won't list them. 

The programme does start with "The Tryal Of Old Christmas" by George Rayner-Law, and if it had of happened this track would have kicked off the four hour broadcast ... The piece is from a cassette called "The Tryal Of Old Christmas" on Brachliegen Tapes. George also releases under the name of Schwerpunkt. 

"Brachliegen mainstay George Rayner-Law delivers his third solo release of the year, an offering of good cheer and merriment straight from Nowelis' festive sack. The Tryal Of Old Christmas is 20 minutes of saturated yuletide tapeworm wherein resonant bells from London and France peal against tectonic organ chords and degraded trial records. In defence of the lamented Nowell, GRL rallies against the scoundrels of the jury who would decide Father Christmas' fate in Joshua King's classic 1658 seasonal pamphlet 'The Examination And Tryall Of Old Father Christmas'. Written at the time of Cromwell's ban on yuletide festivities due to their popish jollification. King's text positions the figurative Old Christmas as a part of the English constitutional firmament, a timeless personification of the festive period who does not incite men to excess but rather celebration and good cheer. An ode to playe days, good cheer, plum pudding, and good olde English beer. 'The Tryal Of Old Christmas' is a yuletide celebration mounted in defence of this Old Gentleman thus egregiously abused "Let's dance and sing and make good cheer for Christmas comes but once a year". Be not like Mr. Hate-Good and enjoy a protean Christmas .".

Back in January 2021 Swedish duo Monokultur released their second LP "Ormens Väg". If I compiled lists like 'Top Ten Albums Of 2021", this LP would be in the top five ... but I don't do lists like that. All tracks in this broadcast are from this LP. 

Hot on the tails of 2019's "Chemical Flowers" comes the new album "Axis" by Luke Younger's Helm. Released by New York based label Dais Records the album features contributions from Mark Morgan (To Live And Shave In LA) and Alex Tucker (Dead Leaves). The album comes in many colours and formats. "Ensam Är Nattens Rymd Över Vita Väger" is the third part of Arv & Miljö's seasonal ambient tetralogy. (Following on from 2018's "Svensk Sommer I Still Frid" and 2019's "Himmelsvind"). 

11 pieces inspired by a childhood experiencing the cold winters of Gothenburg. Matthias Andersson (Arv & Miljö) creates a sound of what the world would sound like from inside a snow cave. Keeping all things Svensk, the track by Charlott Melmenholt is from the new compilation CD "Contemporary Homemade Music From Sweden" on Discreet Music. Charlott is one half of the duo Treasury Of Puppies. The CD also includes Treasury Of Puppies alongside Blod, Leda, Amateur Hour and Arv & Miljö amongst others. Sometimes I will buy a record / release because I like the artwork or name. Cheap Imitation fall into both categories. I saw the sleeve for the 7" "Selektiv Döhvet" in the Discreet Music catalogue and knew I had to hear it. Cheap Imitation are from Gothenburg and comprise of Anders Olofson and Anne-Charlotte Rugfelt. XTC were the first band I saw live outside Lincoln. (That's not counting The Secret who were support on that night or indeed Wayne Fontana And The Mindbenders who I 'accidentally' saw in a pub in Brean (Somerset) whilst on holiday in 1976). XTC released their debut "White Music" album on January 20 1978, and the tour hit Nottingham in the same month. January 20 1978 was a Friday, I remember missing school that day to take the four mile trek to Lincoln (walking along the River Witham to avoid detection) to get to Sanctuary records and buy "Never Been In A Riot" with my dinner money. 70 pence well spent. 

The EP was the first on the Fast Product label. A couple of years later in 1980 A Certain Ratio released their debut album "The Graveyard & The Ballroom" on Factory. It was originally released as a cassette, seven songs a side with studio recordings from The Graveyard Studios in Prestwich (Manchester) and songs from a live performance at The Electric Ballroom (London) in 1979 where they were supporting Joy Division and The Distractions. 

I bought the cassette compilation "Skunk'd Gunk" for the Nolls track. I had never heard of the other contributors (mainly American projects) and discovered this to be one of my favourite compilations last year. The cassette is on the D.I.H.D. label. Based in Lambertsville  New Jersey (USA) and run by members of the Human Adult Band. Big Blood are a four piece from Maine. Syko Friend is the project of Los Angeles based artist Sophie Rose Weil who also records under the moniker of Bitch Lady Twat. Copies of the tape are available from the label : http://www.dihd.net, I don't know if there's any European distribution. There will be no represses so grab one whilst you can. Nolls will be heard on the next broadcast. 

"And Shall We Drink The New Wine" was released to coincide with September's US tour by Drekka and Onewayness. It's a CDR limited to 14 copies. I recently was in touch with Adam Holquist (AKA Onewayness) who mailed me some sounds and this was part of the package. 

At last there is a decent secondhand record shop close by to where I live .. well, Exeter .. about 23 miles away. Hussar Records in the district of Pinhoe is well worth a visit if you're ever down Devon way. It was there I picked up the double compilation album "Driving Me Backwards" on Dead Man's Curve.

The album is a sampler of what was being released by the label in 1987. The Portion Control track is from this album. Dead Man's Curve was run by Dave Henderson, Dave was a journalist who worked for 'Sounds' back in the 1980's and compiled the influential 'Wild Planet' column which was translated onto vinyl via the "Elephant Table Album" and "Three Minute Symphony" both on X Tract. The album also features Smegma, Last Few Days, Home & Garden, Thinking Plague and Kill Ugly Pop amongst others. The Howard Stelzer track is from the CD "Your Own Working Class Will Bury You (Suburban Observances Volume Four)" on Humanhood Recordings. Volume 1 was released by UK's Chocolate Monk and volume three by US label Tribe Tapes, as far as I know volume two has yet to appear. MuhMur Radio Broadcasts 2022 Season (Winter / Spring)..

 

Hello and a happy new (y)ear to you all ... 

Firstly, apologies for the non-show of the annual 'Four Hour Festive Feast' this past December / January. Live broadcasting in the time of Covid proved too difficult for both myself and Chris at SoundArt Radio. We shall attempt to 'do better' this year .. 

MuhMur Radio Broadcasts will begin on January 20 this year with some sounds that arrived at MuhMur HQ over the 'holiday season' (not much of a holiday for those of us who work in the NHS ... but I'm not complaining) and a 'On This Day' featuring XTC, The Mekons and A Certain Ratio. Kick Off will be (as ever) at 20:00 hours GMT and archived on MixCloud a few hours later. Links will be available via this blog. 

The MuhMur Radio Broadcasts will be fortnightly from January 20, February broadcasts will be on the 3rd and 17th .. same for March too (3rd & 17th) and an added bonus of March 31st. I hope that all makes sense.

MuhMur Radio Broadcast 9 December 2021.

 

Once in a while there will be a MuhMur Radio Broadcast that happens on or is one day either side of my birthday. These programmes are usually eclectic and as random as a bag of Dolly Mixtures. The programme was recorded sometime in mid November, but knowing it would be broadcast a day after my 59th I kept the eclecticism prevalent. 

The programme starts with a track from Flutwacht. I have recently got my hands (and ears) on a copy of "Puls" released in 2017. Flutwacht is the solo project of German noisician Daniel Simon. I first came across Flutwacht with the album "Nebel" released in 2011 by Licht Und Stahl and have been slowly collecting his releases since. Daniel also works under the name of Fieberflug and has collaborated with French industrialists Muckrackers. In September this year Genocide Organ released the great single "Khalsa". This made me dig out a few of my Genocide Organ records and I rediscovered the 1999 LP "The Truth Will Make You Free". I think it was 1999 when I first met Klaus and Mikeal from Genocide Organ They were in the UK to play live as Anenzaphalia (could be 2000?), but anyway, we met, we drank, we chatted and a few months later Dieter Müh were releasing on Tesco Organisation. The tracks here are from this album. The album was reissued in 2019, copies may still be available from Tesco Organisation : https://tesco-germany.com 

The Aube track is from the 4x&" Box Set "Quadrotation", the 'glow & fluorescent lamp' single. I thought the Cabaret Voltaire track "Obsession" fitted well afterwards. The Severed Heads track is from the "City Slab Horror" album originally released in 1985. The copy I have is on the Medical Records label, a label in Seattle (USA) that specialises in house music and disco re-releases. I saw Severed Heads live in 1985 at The Leadmill in Sheffield. Just Tom Ellard. He was supported by Hula and a band I have never heard of since called Fabricata Illuminata. Tom did a 40 minute improvisation to a group of 20 year olds stood around in long raincoats and khaki trousers. A couple of years ago a friend went to see Severed Heads play live in London and said the venue was packed with teenage 'rave' types all dancing along to the Severed Heads sound .. the move to Medical Records seems to have been a good one. 

When recording this programme I knew I would be in Lincoln a few days later. Whenever I head back to Lincoln (the place of my birth) I usually walk past old venues and bore the wife and kids with stories from my youth. The New Penny, The Cornhill Vaults, AJ's, Trilbys, The Drill Hall, The Art College, The Regency Ballroom ... the list goes on and on. Anyway, The impending trip back to Lincoln made me dig 

out some old records by Lincoln bands. I know Ultravox! are not from Lincoln but (I think) the best gig I ever saw in Lincoln was Ultravox! in 1978 at AJ's on their "System Of Romance" tour. "Someone Else's Clothes" is from this album. 

Three of my favourite Lincoln 'punk' bands around 1978 - 1980 were The Cigarettes, Pseudo Existors and Whizz Kids. Whizz Kids were the perennial support band at AJ's. If a band turned up without a support then nine times out of ten the Whizz Kids would be playing on a couple of trestle tables set up in front of the stage. (AJ's had a really small stage). I saw them a couple of times when The Lurkers came to town, and Cyanide and I am sure they supported Ultravox! too. 1979 was a great year for singles by Lincoln bands with The Cigarettes releasing the great "They're Back Again, Here They Come" EP on Company Records. "All We Want Is Your Money" is from this EP. There's a great website with an interview with The Cigarettes with some great photos here : https://www.psychedelicbabymag.com/2012/09/the-cigarettes-interview-with-stephen.html. 1980 and The Cigarettes moved to Dead Good Records and released the excellent 7" "Can't Sleep At Night" .. and then that was it. Two singles and a John Peel Session. In 2019 Optic Nerves Records released a compilation of The Cigarettes singles, live tracks, Peel Session and Demos called "You Were So Young". Copies are only £6! Get one here : https://opticnerverecordings.com/collections/the-cigarettes. Pseudo Existors released their only 7"EP on Dead Good Records in 1979. "Coming Up For Air" is from the "Stamp Out Normality" EP. A decent copy of this EP can cost up to £100 but luckily those good folk at Harbinger Sound re-issued the EP as part of an album that includes live and Demo tracks. Hunt one down via Discogs. 

"Cheek To Cheek" always finished the Whizz Kids live set, it was their version of Sid doing "My Way". The track is from their debut single "PAYE As You Earn". In 1980 Dead Good Records released the obligatory compilation album highlighting the 'sound of Lincolnshire' called "East". It features The Cigarettes, Whizz Kids, Pseudo Existors from Lincoln. Fatal Charm from Nottingham, B Movie from Mansfield (listed as B Movies) and Half Life from Louth. There's also tracks by Sincere Americans and Vick Sinex & The Nasal Sprays. I still have no idea who these bands are / were. A shame Sinking Ships and X-S Energy weren't on there instead. The LP is compiled by Chris Hall who used to run Playground Studios in Wragby so perhaps it was contractual. The LP also has one of the worst covers ever!

The B Movie track "Refugee" is from "East". Using my DJ license once again and playing the 'same title different song' card I follow B Movie "Refugee" with Portion Control's "Refugee". This track is from the -LP "Step Forward". 

Broken Lights is the solo project of Swedish experimentalist Martin Herterich. "In Solemn Ritual" is from the 2013 cassette compilation "Venice Of the North". I think the cassette is out of print and Broken Lights don't seem to be active anymore. Broken Lights do have an active SoundCloud page. take a listen here : https://soundcloud.com/broken-lights. 

I always thought that the Ripchords were from Lincoln. I only discovered a few years back that they were from Somerset. The Ripchords 7" EP inventively titled "The Ripchords 4 Track EP" was always for sale in Sanctuary Records, always in the 7" 'shoebox' that was on the counter. The Ripchords included a guy called Morris Gould and around 1979 - 1980 Morris was treading the piss soaked beer covered boards of many Lincoln venues as The Rhythm Method. The Rhythm Method were one of the finest Lincoln bands at the time. Morris had a WASP synthesiser, microphone and some effects pedals in a suitcase he would then make a great throbbing noise for twenty minutes, pack up and disappear. For a short while Morris had a 'roadie', a good friend called Bernie who would carry the suitcase from gig to gig. Around 1981 Morris moved to Maida Vale in London to work as a sound engineer for This Heat / Cold Storage. I went to his flat a couple of times for parties and such. At the turn of the 1990's Morris became The Irresistible Force and DJ Mixmaster Morris making a name for himself on the rave and dance scene. "Ringing In The Streets" is from this EP recorded in Pater Gabriel's studio in Bath. Another group I thought were from Lincoln but never were are The Bleach Boys. Back to Sanctuary Records shop in Lincoln and just inside the door was a poster advertising the single "Chloroform" by The Bleach Boys. Itv was on the wall for months! It was a cheap DIY photocopy type poster but it was on Tramp Records and Tramp was the name of a guy who worked behind the counter at Sanctuary. He also had a job as studio engineer at nearby Playground Studios in Wragby. I put 2 and 2 together and reached 5. 

Recently Rave Up Records of Rome, Italy have re-issued the 7" "Chloroform" single along with unreleased studio and live recordings and a 1982 version of their 1988 single "Stocking-Clad Nazi Death Squad Bitches". Rave Up also released a great album by Dangerous Girls called "Present : Recordings 1978 - 1982". Dangerous Girls were a prog-punk band formed in Birmingham in 1978. Both albums are available from Rave Up here : https://www.raveuprecords.com. Rave Up Records have also released a retrospective of work by English Subtitles "Ear Piercing (Oranges And Lemons Demos)". It came out last year, I am still to get a copy ... but "Tannoy" is such a good song! It comes as no surprise that both The Bleach Boys and Dangerous Girls are still recording and playing live, unlike Shoes For Industry the Bristol based band from the late 1970's. Shoes For Industry were formed by members of the theatrical troupe 'Crystal Theatre'. The tracks here are from their one and only LP "Talk Like A Whelk". 

'On This Day' features The Bonus and their 7" "The Bulrushes" although I play the B Side "Automatic Doors" as I think the A Side is a bit below par for The Bongos. 

The single is out of print but easily found on Discogs etc. It comes as no surprise that The Bongos have reformed. https://www.legacyrecordings.com/artists/the-bongos/. 

Rudolf's Rache are a punk band from Germany formed in the early 1980's. Recently I managed to track down an original copy of the compilation cassette "International Sound Communication #10", released in 1986 by A Man's Hate Production. The tape features IBF (that's why I wanted it), LD 50, Crawling With Tarts, Katharsis, Stress and Do Easy amongst others including Rudolf's Rache. What jumped out at me was the contact for the band was Lutz Pruditsch. Lutz I know of through his work as Tarkatak and his releases on Drone Records, Bake Records and his own Trümmer Kassetten label. I played live with Tarkatak in 2013 at Der Elefant in Bremen. All these years and I did not know we had a connection. Tantric Death is Max Eastman and Kelly Koistinen from North Carolina, USA. I am slowly discovering the work of Max Eastman through his solo releases on Tribe Tapes and the Bristol (UK) based label Liquid Library. I managed to get a copy of the Tantric Death split tape with En Nihil (again on Tribe Tapes) and liked it so much I went after other releases discovering "Pearls Before Swine" a cassette on the UK Industrial Coast label. The programme ends with side one of this cassette. On the 13th of September 2018 MuhMur Radio broadcast exclusive material / sounds by Thorsten Soltau x Comrades, included in the 'session', that also included solo work by Thorsten and collaborative work with Pharmakustik, Marina Stewart and Ragpole Reel, was a piece of collaborative work with German sound artist Emerge called "Kalk & Schiefer". The piece has now been released by Auf Abwegen on the CD "Acker Und Seche". "Postskriptum Eines Traumes" is also from the CD ... the closing piece. The album also includes a lengthy collaborative piece between Thorsten, Emerge and RLW (Ralf Wehowsky). Highly recommended. Over the past 12 months UK label Steep Gloss have put out volumes entitled 'Blank Tape Compilation'. Does anyone remember the Small Wonder records catalogue from the late 1970's? It's where I used to but my Film Cast singles from. The Film Cast, a mysterious project that only produced four 7" singles and all on their own True Friends Music label. I used to (and still do) liken them to bands such as Metabolist, A Popular History Of Signs and File Under Pop. "Life In A Film Cast was their second single. They also did a great cover version of "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted", well worth hunting for ...  Wieman is the duo Roel Meelkop and Frans deWaard. The one minute piece here is from a new 3" CD album "Casiotone Compilation #9" on Ao To Ao. The album is a collection of one minute pieces by various projects with the common link of Frans deWaard. Modelbau, THU 20, Shifts, Kapotte Muziek, Doc War Mirran ... you get the picture. All pieces use a Casiotone VL keyboard. Camp Sophisto were Peter Hein (formrly of Mittagspause) and Michael König. In 1983 they released the great 7" "Obsession" on the Pure Freude label following a year later with the mini-LP "Camouflage" on Sneaky Pete Records. The track here is from the mini-LP. In 1984 they split with Michael playing in Asmodi Bizarr and Peter joining the pop group Family5. 

'On This Day' features two great records, firstly the 7" single "Afterwards" by Artery (b/w "Into The Garden"). Artery were one of those great bands of the late 1970's / early 1980's that were totally overlooked. I saw them live a few times and they were one of those bands where anything could happen .. and quite often did, the smashing of instruments, audience intimidation and if I remember rightly onstage pissing at The Gallery in Manchester (1984). "Into The Garden" is taken from their 1981 John Peel Session. Also on this day in 1980 The Fall released "Grotesque (After The Gramme)'" LP. 

"Zungsang" is the latest album by Joke Lanz. Released on cassette by the French label Vice De Forme. All the tracks here make up side 2. Inspired by subconscious memories and nightmares. Joke tells me that there'll be a new Sudden Infant album out in 2022 released by Fourth Dimension. Grey Frequency are no strangers to the MuhMur Radio playlist. 2021 has been a busy year for Gavin Morrow (aka Grey Frequency) with the self-released album "Paranormal" and the two cassettes on Sensory_Leakage and their compact and bijou label Remote Viewing. Grey Frequency also appear on the compilation album "Stellar", the third in the 'Drone Series' on Eighth Tower Records. On the 25th of September 2021 Grey Frequency played as part of a "Weird Gardens" evening at Bristol's Rockaway Park venue. The track here is an exclusive listen of that evening's performance. It was the ending sounds of nature that brought to mind "Wu Wei" by Juice Machine. The track is from their CD album "Deep As A Depthless Pond" on the (new to me) Russian Besperch' label. It was hearing Juice Machine on David Warmbier's 'Institute Of Spectra-Sonic Sounds' that lead me into their world. Juice Machine are the improvisational duo R.H. Smith and Heather Chessman from Eugene, Oregon. A lot of their releases are self-released and files only so it's really good to have them physically on other labels. If it had only clicked at the time of recording this programme I would have started with the B Movie single "Remembrance Day". Ah well, the broadcast kicks off with a track from the Howard Stelzer cassette "I've Told You Once (Suburban Observances Volume Two)". It's a cassette on the US Tribe Tapes label and (I guess) a follow up to Volume One that was released by UK label Chocolate Monk a few weeks ago. Tribe Tapes have European distribution through White Centipede Noise in Germany and Electric Knife Records / Industrial Coast and Tordon Ljud in the UK. Volume four in the Suburban Observances series is a double CD on Humanhood Records. Hopefully my copy will arrive soon ... 

A few weeks ago the new album by Blue Chemise came through and it has a track called "Chrysanthemum No.1" and that got me thinking ... I have a great piece by Aube called "Chrysanthemum" that is on the compilation "Infernal Proteus". Playing the DJ license card I play both tracks back to back. "Infernal Proteus" is a 4xCD release with the CDs being encased in a hardback book, it features artists including Aube, Apoptose, Troum, Yannick Dauby, Chaos As Shelter and Ultra amongst others. Released in 2002 I imagine copies are long sold out but Discogs have copies for sale  ... worth having. 

Blue Chemise is the project of Australian musician Mark Gomes. I first came across the sound of Blue Chemise through the excellent 7" "The Music Lesson" on the I Dischi Del Barone label. "Chrysanthemum No.1" is from the LP "Flower Studies". A collection of eight pastorales on strings and piano inspired by the photographs of Adolphe Braun (1812 - 1877).  Released on the Belgian B.A.D.D.M. label and limited to 444 copies. https://baadm.bandcamp.com/album/flower-studies

Always a treat to hear new sounds / material by Swedish sound-genius Mattias Gustafsson (aka Altar Of Flies). "Utan Titel" is from the new cassette "Piano And Tapeworks Volume II" on Mattias' own imprint Hästen & Korsett. Tordon Ljud and White Centipede Noise are doing the European distribution on this release. Again, worth having. 

Tesco Organisation have been busy with releases over the past few weeks. They have now put out Himukalt's 12th album "Dreaming Of A Dead Girl". Himukalt is the project of American industrial artist Ester Kärkkäinen. Tesco Organisation have also released "Asura" the new album from Linekraft. Linekraft is the project of Japanese noise artist Masahiko Okubo. 

"Asura" is the Hindu god of wrath as far as I can make out, the album has titles dedicated to political assassination and suicide ... it really is a breath of fresh air and it's great to hear well crafted and strutted power electronics again which I can also say about the new 7" single from Genocide Organ. "Khalsa" / "Operation Blue Star" is volume four in the 7" series 'Religious Extremism (Alternativism)' series by Genocide Organ.

The cassette was released by Remote Viewing on the 13th of August and only available via the labels Bandcamp page on that day. This seems to be a marketing ploy taken up by a few labels recently and I'm not 'a fan' of it. I can understand the point of labels, small labels who do home dubbing, can know the exact figure to copy so there's not a shoebox full in the attic gathering dust for years. But, surely the label will know it's minimum / maximum sales be it 10, 12, 30 or 300. Perhaps I am not keen on this selling technique as there are days when I don't go on the internet - for various reasons - or only get to pages late at night when releases are now "sold out". Lee Riley is a musician / sound artist based in Oxford, back in 2018 he collaborated with Stuart Chalmers to release the cassette "Points Of Vital Differences" on Cruel Nature Records. Well worth hunting down. 

Over the past twelve months or so Stuart has been releasing a series of albums that all summon the heart of 'things'. Beginning with "The Heart Of Contemplation" (Wormhole Wood / Tavern Eightieth), followed by "The Heart Of Instinct" (TQ N-aut) and most recently "The Heart Of Nature" (Ikuisuus / Opal Tapes). It's really good to hear new releases from Ukranian artist Edward Sol. "Go And Get Dressed" is his latest cassette on his own Quasi Pop Records label. The two Aube tracks "Scrub" and "Passive Attack" are from the 4x7" box "Quadrotation". Alex at Tordon Ljud was selling original copies recently. I am guessing that someone found a shoebox full gathering dust in their attic recently. It's an Aube release I missed out on back in the mid 90's, so it's great to have a copy ... at last. 

The programme ends with a track from the timeless album (mini LP?) "Hit The Pulse" by Portion Control.
