' is this machine recording?'At the start of the month there was a three day event in London called 'Interzone' celebrating the work of William S. Burroughs in London. Those taking part were Adi Newton, Robin Rimbaud, Jill Westwood, John Gosling, Graham Duff, Jack Sergeant, Matthew Levi Stevens and Jim Pennington amongst a whole list of others. Hopefully this will not be the first / last. It all took place at the Horse Hospital in Bloomsbury and its' surrounds ... A few pieces in tonights broadcast celebrate this event ... including the Joy Division track "Interzone". It is from the LP "Unknown Pleasures".
"And I was looking for some friend of mine, And I had no time to waste, yeah looking for some friends of mine".
Last month there were two releases from Ester Kärkkäinen's Himukalt project. "Torn Asunder : The Half Girl" first appeared as part of the 10xCassette box "On : Corrosion" released on the (excellent) Helen Scarsdale Agency Records label in 2019. Slowly the ten cassettes are being reissued on vinyl, I have the Neutral and Alice Kemp reissues. "Katoptronophilia, Part Two" is a C35 cassette on Ester's own EK Verlag imprint and a follow on from last year's "Katoptronophilia, Part One" cassette. (I've looked it up and Katoptronophilia is deriving sexual pleasures from mirrors). "A.B. In The Mirror" features the voice of A.B.

"French electronic artists Flint Glass (Gwenn Trémorin) and Cent Ans De Solitude (Jean-Yves Millet) present To Lhasa In Disguise, their second collaborative original soundtrack for silent film, released on Les Nouvelles Propagandes (NP.033). Following their acclaimed first collaboration on the 1920s industrial film Sprengbagger 1010, the duo returns with a new immersive live score composed for Mysterious Tibet by the American explorer and scholar William Montgomery McGovern.
A second silent film collaboration, Flint Glass and Cent Ans de Solitude have established themselves as a duo deeply committed to the art of live cinema-concert scoring. Their first collaboration brought them together to compose and perform an original soundtrack for Sprengbagger 1010, a silent film from the 1920s, demonstrating their shared interest in restoring and reinterpreting the lost sonic worldof early cinema through contemporary electronic music. With To Lhasa In Disguise they continue this singular practice - composing scores that navigate between hypnotic ambient textures, ritual percussion and dense electronic drones, always conceived to serve the moving image while standing fully on their own as a listening experience.
About the film : At the time when Tibet was entirely closed to foreigners, the American scientist and adventurer William M. McGovern (1897-1964) traveled to the 'forbidden city' of Lhasa disguised as a Tibetan coolie and equipped with a hidden camera becoming one of the first Westerners of the 20th Century to secretly enter Lhasa and document its people and rituals on film. In Myserious Tibet - To Lhasa In Disguise McGovern nath his expedition through dramatic and sometimes seemingly embellished narratives, while capturing authentic footage of market scenes, ritual dances, the Dance Of Death, and the Tibetan dice game. First shown in Swiss cinemas in the late 1920s, it was beautifully restored in 2015 by the Cinémathèque Suisse."
The CD is available from Jean-Yves at :

I had the pleasure of performing live with Cent Ans De Solitude back in 2014 when Dieter Müh played at El Diablo in Lille, France, an evening organised by Nuit Et Brouillard. It was a great evening and one of my favourite live performances ... perhaps because I don't have a recording of it! Le Syndicat also played on the evening.
The William S. Burroughs and Meredith Monk pieces are from the new compilation album "Avant-Garde Toute!". It's a free download via the Lenka Lente label. The album features 20 artists featuring Gavin Bryars, Michael O'Shea, William Basinski and Wolf Vostell amongst others. The sounds accompany the book of the same name by Phillipe Robert & Joëlle Vinciarelli. Recommended listening. More information via :

Earlier this year Frans de Waard and Julius Ménard (of Grisaille) collaborated on the reissue of the complete catalogue of the Opus Dei Society label. 23 cassettes released between 1985 - 1987. I wrote about the book here :
https://remuhmuration.blogspot.com/2025/12/we-know-how-to-hate-opus-dei-society.html. If this radio programme continues I plan to play a lot more from this catalogue. The A Violated Body track is from the 1985 cassette album (each tape is a C30) "Scars". A Violated Body were Peter Desmet who also released under the name Zweiter Corps. The track I play doesn't seem to be listed on the cassette sleeve. Side two has three pieces although only two are listed. "Sounds As Machines" and "Rape Act 5 Live". All A Violated Body and Zweiter Corps cassettes are recommended.

My summer reading was Ian Trowell's
"An Endless Discontent" published by Intellect Books as part of their 'Global Punk' series. At first it was a difficult book to get in to, lots of references crossed referenced and explained. It was reading as a post-grad thesis, Phd rather than and interesting read ... but after a couple of introductory chapters the book drew me in. I know there's been a lot of books written about Throbbing Gristle and the Cosey books and Gen's "Non Binary" biography, but this book (well written) approached the subject through live performances and socio-politico, cultural happening at the time. Whilst reading it helped to have a soundtrack of Throbbing Gristle playing, looking at old MuhMur Radio playlists I saw that I hadn't played "Walkabout" before, it's from the "20 Jazz Funk Greats" album. "An Endless Discontent" is still available from the publishers, I bought my copy from 'World Of Books' in the UK. Please don't buy from Amazon.

Earlier this year Kringloop Kassettes of Nijmegen released "The Key" by Kluik ... a new name to me, a new sound for my ears and brain to enjoy .. Information on or about Kluik is rather thin on the internet but I did see that they had released a CDR on the excellent Hyster Tapes label of Helsinki, so I got in touch with Heikke who runs the label and he recommended their debut release "Verstorlüng", self released in 2024.

"Verstorüng". (Kluik).
"Human Human Human" by Nurse With Wound comes from the 1990 "Sinister Senile EP" released on Stefan Jaworzyn's Shock label. The track is co-written by David Jackman of Organum. The Severed Heads "Goodbye Tonsils" 12" is sill a classic from 1985. I was digging around in my tape boxes and found a live recording of Severed Heads at The Leadmill in Sheffield. April 1 1985, t'was a great gig with Hula supporting. Tape quality isn't too clever so I had to dig out this 12".
Osaka based sound artist Takahiro Mukai has a brace of new releases to look out for including "Foreign
Body" on Nazlo Records. Nazlo Records are based in France and put out all their releases on secondhand cassettes. Also available is the cassette "Naïve" on the Paris (France) label Biardo Records.
Great to recieve the latest album from Ben Hallatt's Cei Hill Project. "... chroma (GREEN)" follows on from the 2022 release "(Variation)". '
5 tracks of salvaged sound work. Deeply eroded metallic drones with beachcombed details and buried emotional undercurrents'. Ben has been operating the KIKS/Girlfriend label for over ten years releasing his own projects, Murder Cult, Daphne And Lyndsey, SCKE // and W>A>S>P>S as well as artist such as Alan Courtis, Kevin Sanders, BBBlood and Naomi Chomsky. Well worth discovering.
https://kiksgfrlabel.bandcamp.com/merch. I hear there is a collaboration with Grey Frequency in the pipeline, both of course Nottingham based projects.
A favourite Nottingham band of mine is Fatal Charm. Back in the early 1980s I saw them live a few times in Nottingham and Lincoln. They first came to my notice when they appeared on the East Midlands compilation album "East", released by Dead Good Records in 1980, then the "Paris" 7"EP on Company Records (Lincoln's finest). They split in the late 80s (probably 1988) but have recently reformed for live gigs ... haven't they all. I popped in to Torquay record fair at the beginning of the month and found a 12" copy of their "King Of Comedy" single. A fiver well spent (although Chris said it sounded like Belinda Carlisle!).
