Penultimatum / Penultimata!
299/300 ... Here To Go.
The broadcast kicks off with 'Jonestown Overture' by Birth Of Tragedy. Originally released in 1986 on the cassette "Death Survives" by Opus Dei Society. Subsequent reissues of the cassette have appeared on Zeal SS, Sound Of Pig and Flesh Records. "Death Survives" is part of the 23 cassette series recently released by Grisaille / Opus Dei Society. (and accompanying book on Korm Plastics).
"FdW : With David and Trev you did the Birth Of Tragedy release. How did that come about? Who chose the name, which I assume is a reference to Nietzsche?
AP : He sent me some background tracks, and I added all the violins and metal percussion and synths, as that seemed to work for me. It wasn't suggested, as it hardly ever was, so one did things one saw fit. Trev came up with the 'band name' and the titles".
Go to https://www.kormplastics.nl/we-know-how-to-hate-the-opus-dei-society-story/ for the book and to https://opusdeisociety.bandcamp.com to grab the cassettes. Last night (Friday night) I played the excellent Vandal X cassette "Sing Me A New Song", Vandal X being a side project of Amor Fati member Don Van Handel, the cassette has a bonus album by Vandal X and Frans de Waard on the B-Side called "Ragnarok" which is excellent ... hopefully find room for a track on the next broadcast.
Carrying on with the Reverend Jim Jones theme there is Mr. Tupper by German Shepherds.
I can't quite remember when I first heard German Shepherds, I think I was sent the cassette "Experience The Freedom Of Total Control" by Mikko of Freak Animal Records / Grunt back at the turn of the century. German Shepherds were from San Francisco formed in 1981 by Mark Hutchinson and Steve Scheatzle. Scheatzle died in 1992. "Mr. Tupper" is from their only LP "Music For Sick Queers", originally released in 1991 on their own M&S Music label (as is the cassette) and reissued in 2012 by the San Franciscan label Superior Viaduct. (For some reason 'blocked for sale' by Discogs). Mr. Tupper refers to Timothy Glenn Jones, the adopted son of The Reverend Jim Jones. He was away from Jonestown when the massacre occurred, he was in Georgetown Guyana with The People's Temple basketball team. Mr. Tupper died in 2019.
Rongwrong were formed in 1990 by Maciek Piaseczynski, Marcin Kamieniek and Piotr Galcynski. Rongwrong was a name given to a (short lived) journal by DaDa artists Marcel Duchamp, Beatrice Wood and Henri-Pierre Roché. Rongwrong's first release was "Epiphany" on the Polish OBUH Records label in 1993. Copies are still available on the internet, the album was re-released by Requiem Records in 2018 on CD format : https://requiem-records.com/pl/main. I have found out that Maciek has recently resurrected the project. https://goout.net/en/rongwrong/pztsbig/ for more information.
There are quite a few tunes I could've played for the On This Day section tonight ... In 1979 there was The Fall's "Dragnet" LP (and then I could've written about how I supported The Fall at Retford Porterhouse in 1979 whilst they were on their "Dragnet" tour, but I'll save you all that!) Essential Logic's "Beat Rhythm News~Waddle Ya Play?" LP and the Hugh Cornwall & Robert Williams single "White Room" from the "Nosferatau" LP. In 1982 Cabaret Voltaire put out the "Hai!" LP, an audio travelogue of their first tour of Japan but I have chosen to play Cabaret Voltaire's first venture on to vinyl and the track "Talkover" from their 1978 7"EP "Extended Play". For me (in 1978) a life changer.
I must have heard it the John Peel radio show ... same goes for A Certain Ratio who in 1980 released the 12"EP "Blown Away" on Factory Records.
I first became aware of Blod back in 2016 when they put out the 7" "Käre Jesus" on I Dischi Del Barone. IDDB was the label operated by Matthias Anderson of Art & Miljö, and a splinter / side label project of Discreet Music. The IDDB 7" releases were quite frequent back then with some classic sounds by the likes of Kostis Kilymis, Krube, Arv & Miljö, Leda, Sarah Mary Chadwick and Komare amongst many others, a label well worth investing in ... you can find them for sale on Discogs. I did think that it was a bit strange that Blod were being released by IDDB until I discovered it was a separate project to Stockholm based power electronics / noise outfit Blod who released on Segerhuva Records in the 1990s. Over the coming years I devoured the sound of Blod, playing a lot on MuhMur Radio but back around 2022/2023 I did find the sound getting a little self indulgent and distinctly Lo-Fi.
I was, however, drawn to the cassette "You Are Not Alone (Volume 1,2,3)" self released at the start of the year by Gustaf Dicksson (aka Blod). I have played pieces from volume 2 on previous programmes and wanted to have the other volumes ... (volume 1 is virtually unavailable and volume 3 was an ultra limited lathe cut disc).
Information on Blod can be found via https://www.discreetmusic.se
I received a nice package through from Sasha at Second Language Records earlier in the month. Second Language Records are based in Melbourne, Australia. Sasha Margolis operates as Automating, and their most recent release is "Set (With Manipulation, Intervention & Commendation By The Hafler Trio)". The CD also includes a piece by Constant Light who are another of Sasha's projects alongside Stella Severain and James Dean. The two tracks here are from the 2019 cassette "Approach". Sasha can be contacted at : https://automating.bandcamp.com/music.
Le Stelle De Mario Schifano were a 'psychedelic rock' band formed in 1967 in Rome. They played a few live shows with Gerard Malanga of Andy Warhol / The Factory fame before splitting in 1968. The version of "Dedicato A ..." is from the recent album "Avant-Garde Toute!" on Lenka Lente. For more details go to https://www.lenkalente.com.
The latest Current 93 album is "Hallucinate, Children". The album is a soundtrack for several rooms at Dave Tibet's latest exhibition in Prague. It is also available (either now or soon) in cassette format and as a 6 CD Box Set (on Dieter Promotions). Each format contains different sounds ...
Concrete Colored Paint is a project of Peter Kris. I know Peter through his involvement with German Army and their rather excellent "Burushaski" cassette on Belaten (2013). The Concrete Colored Paint piece here is from the cassette "Strigiformes" on there French label Biardo Records. Biardo Records have also just released the latest Takahiro Mukai cassette "Naïve". https://biardo.bandcamp.com/merch to grab copy.
I think the cassette is limited to 8 copies only, each with an individual and unique cover by the artist Chereshenkaa. It's also available as a download.
At the moment I am re-reading Dave Haslam's excellent "Not ABBA" book about life growing up in the 1970s, something that I did! My teenage years. I met Dave a few times in the early 1980s when we were regulars on a Tuesday night at The Hacienda in Manchester. He later went on to produce 'Debris' magazine and acquire the nickname 'Debris Dave' .. lovely chap but I digress. A week or two ago I got volumes 1 & 2 of "Anoraky In The UK" Each volume has 101 reviews of rare DIY punk and new wave 7" singles released between 1977 - 1981. Written by Tony Page who back in those years was a member of The Ploy and Apocalypse.
So, I end the programme with the sounds of some of the singles mentioned ... except NOT John Cooper Clarke and 'Suspended Sentence' ... that was a DJ error! It is not featured in either volume. I often bring a couple of records to play just in case something goes awry .... JCC and The Blanks "Northern Ripper" on this occasion. (The Blanks are mentioned in volume 1). I bought my copies at a very very good price from Printed Matters in Hastings. https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/PrintedMatterHastings. Please do not buy from Amazon.

Thank You for listening (over the years). MuhMur Radio Broadcast #300 WILL be the final broadcast. Probably in December ... and hopefully a 4 hour festive special. When I have a broadcast date I will post it on here.
Apologies for the late posting of this ... I've been away ... Bristol for a few days.
