This broadcast marks the 12th anniversary of MuhMur Radio broadcasting on SoundArt Radio. This is broadcast #272. MuhMur began as a two hour live broadcast on alternate Thursday evenings, originally starting at 9pm, then starting earlier at 8pm a few years later. The pandemic bought with it restrictions and obstacles but after a handful of broadcasts compiled of downloads and repeats the Thursday programmes became pre-recorded ... recording on Saturday mornings - Saturday afternoons. Earlier this year SoundArt Radio studios switched location (the 5th since I have been broadcasting ... all on the Dartington Hall Estate) and it was decided that I present a monthly four hour live broadcast on a Sunday evening .. and that is where we are now. With live broadcasting there comes 'mistakes' and 'accidents'. This programme has a CD refusing to play from the off. Then the realisation that I hadn't brought all the records that I wanted to play ... small mistakes like that! ah well ... LIVE RADIO I suppose. This programme I wanted to play sounds from Geräuschmanufaktur, a label that has been operating as long as MuhMur Radio. This year they have put out some great releases by the likes of Voodoo Forest, The Dead Mauriacs, The Rights Of Sleepers and (label operative) Jan Warnke. It is one of my favourite labels. Geräuschmanufaktur is based in Osnabrück. https://thecalendar.bandcamp.com for details.
Jan Warnke.Geräuschmanufaktur roughly translates as "Noise Factory". Jan also releases under the pseudonym of J.Adolphe, a harsh wall noise (HNW) project as well as using the names The Voodoo Forest and Red Cliffs (with Thorsten Soltau). I can't remember if I discovered the label through listening to The Dead Mauriacs or vice versa ... whatever, I am glad the label exists and I hope you enjoy the choice of Geräuschmanufaktur 'tunes' I have made ...
Michael Barthel released the double cassette "Heme" in 2017 on Geräuschmanufaktur. I have played extracts from this release on MuhMur Radio over the years ... the two pieces here are from his latest album "Two Im Tier" released on his own Recordings For The Summer label. The album is sound poetry, sound art and abstractism. Both pieces feature the voice of Alice Kemp. More information can be got at : http://www.recordingsforthesummer.de. If you're in the UK Alice has copies here : https://alicekemp.bandcamp.com/merch/two-im-teer-by-michael-barthel-limited-edition-cd.
In February this year Geräuschmanufaktur released the CD "Matatifica" by Miguel A. Garcia / Garazi Gorostiaga and Tube Tentacles. (Miguel released a collaborative CD with Alfredo Costa Monteiro on Geräuschmanufaktur back in 2016 called "Ate Gena"). 'Zizarezulo' is from this album. This CD has the worst font known to man .... it's like I'm looking at a Nordic Death Metal CD from the 1990s. The Jan Warnke piece is from the recent split cassette with The Dead Mauriacs.
The Rights Of Sleepers is a Belgian based project from soundartist Robin C. "Lady In The Carpet" is the A-Side of a 7" lathe-cut EP entitled "Stairs make Eye Contact, A Door Sings Off-Key, The Vase Was Never There". Limited to only 30 copies the single is a follow on release from last year's "And What About The Right Of Sleepers?" cassette.
The Voodoo Forest will take you on a journey into a fantastic world full of reminiscences to the classical art and the great masters. A strange place of mythical legends, fairytales and sagas like the 10Bells or the deep Birnham Wood. It will tell you the tragic story of Macbeth and the priesthood of the voodoo cities. About the legend of the Steppenwolf, its prey and his hunters, until the Whalers of Rottenchapel will lead you to the terrifying Valley of the Myrmaids.
The Voodoo Forest piece is from the double cassette album 'The Voodoo Forest & The Birnham Woods'. I am not certain of the titles' of the piece ... it's side four, it may (or may not) be called "23".
The fiftieth release by Geräuschmanufaktur was the lathe-cut LP "Suspended Dawns, Blind Mirrors, Electrical Paradise". Released in 2018 as a limited edition of 16.
The Dead Mauriacs for this release were Olivier Prieur, Hélène Prieur and Jan Warnke. It also features the voice of MuhMur Radio. In the winter of 2021 Geräuschmanufaktur started the "Geräuschmanufaktur Advent Calendar" project. Through their bandcamp page they digitally released 24 pieces daily leading up to December 25. The tracks by Alfredo Costa Monteiro, The Dead mauriacs and Francisco Meirino are all from the calendar. Other artists included The Voodoo Forest, Emerge, Jan Warnke, Hans Castrup, Michael Esposito, Vomir, red Cliffs and Thorsten Soltau amongst others ... After the 25th it was available as a limited edition on CD-ROM.
I found myself spending a day listening to the sound of Andrea Borghi whilst compiling this broadcast. Thoroughly enjoyable. 'Vetrale #6' is from the CDR 'Vetrale'. Andrea is a former member of VipCranco, information on his output and work is here : https://andreaborghi.com. August's programme included two tracks from the new Frans de Waard/Sindre Bjerga/Fabio Orsi CD 'Counting Backwards From ∞' on Attenuation Circuit. It's a three track album so I decided to finish of the trilogy. Copies can be found at : http://www.attenuationcircuit.de. Unexplained Sounds Group is a label operated by Raffaele Pezzella (a.k.a. Sonologyst). Their latest release is 'Cut Up. Deconstructing W.S. Burroughs'. It's a compilation LP featuring David Lee Myers, Rapoon, PBK, 400 Lonely Things, P.U.M.A. and Paolo Bandera amonst others. The Sigillum S, Dead Voices On Air and Adi Newton pieces are from this LP.
Unexplained Sounds Group has a subsiduary label called Eighth Tower Records that have relased some interesting 'conceptual' compilations, also the subsiduary label Reverse Allignment which released some classic albums by BºTong back in 2017. https://unexplainedsoundsgroup.bandcamp.com for more information. I am always intersted to hear the releases of Takahiro Mukai. His latest relrease is on the Bristol based Cardboard Club label. Cardboard Club is operated by Robert Ridley-Shackleton, an interesting sound artist in his own right. https://cardboardclub.bandcamp.com.
Live radio ... one of the problems of live radio ... I forgot to bring certain records. Following Takahiro would have been side two of the Sewer Election album 'Kassettmusik' followed by two flexi-disc singles by Phantom Plastics released by Geräuschmanufaktur, but I forgot to pack them ... well, the two singles. I could not for the life of me find the Sewer Election album. I know it's somewhere in MuhMur Radio HQ, I only played it about 10 days ago, but where it has gone ... I am slowly (re)cataloguing the contents of MuhMur Radio HQ so I know it will turn up and when it does you shall know because I'm going to play it! Same as the Andrew Chalk "Vega" CD. Mysterious .. For reasons known only to myself I am also blogging the collection here : https://muhmurradiohq.blogspot.com. Luckily the new LP by Ochu arrived last week so I get to play both sides of this album. The album is called 'Dry Routine' and it's on the White Centipede Noise label. WCN are a label I am keeping an eye / ear on now after this and their Jim Haynes release last July. Copies of the Ochu can be bought from the artist at : https://www.millstonevinyl.se.
Another thing that came up whilst planning this broadcast was a message from my friend Tim in Australia. Tim is all over the internet / social media etc and he told me about Frank at Vinyl On Demand putting the question out on his Facebook page asking for people's top 5 B-Sides from 1978 - 1984. That got me thinking and immediately pulled out the Psychic TV 12" of "Just Drifting" with a great version of "OV Power" on the B-Side. For the October programme I shall endeavour to play my top 5 B-Sides list from those years ... and undoubtedly a few more as well.
I remember finding this in a second hand record shop in Paris, it has become one of my most treasured records. I think the shop was called "Born Bad". It was near "Bimbo Tower". (Saint Antoine)?
One of the most fascinating and prolific artists that has released on Geräuschmanufaktur is Thorsten Soltau. In 2014 he released the double cassette "Roman Feast & A Grape From Thor Heyerdahl's Table", credited to Thorsten Soltau x Comrades. (You may remember the Thorsten Soltau x Comrades 'MuhMur Radio Session' from September 2018). Here there are 2 pieces from the 'Roman Feast' cassette. I have checked the Geräuschmanufaktur bandcamp page and a download version is still available.
Out this month is the latest 7" single by sound occultist Michael Idehall. "Apokryphos" is a 4 track EP that comes inside a 52 page art book (collages / paintings / lyrics). It's on the German Ant-Zen label. There is also a download version that features 9 tracks ... recommended. http://www.ant-zen.com. The broadcast finishes on a piece by Robert Curgenven from the 2020 cassette "Ar Ais Aris" on Fort Evil Fruit. As it is live radio I put the wrong side of the cassette in the machine and played a completely different track to the one I had prepared ...
